Manchester’s National BMX Centre Making More Improvements for 2012

In May 2011 the National Indoor BMX Arena installed the latest of a series of improvements aimed at developing accessibility for pedestrians. The new footbridge straddles the Ashton Canal and is both foot and bike friendly. The bridge has primarily been installed for athletes, but community use was borne in mind throughout the design process. The 50M bridge links the new (as yet unfinished) East Manchester Line Metrolink Velopark tram stop with the National BMX Arena.

Billed as the “home of British cycling”, the £19 million National BMX Arena and established National Cycling Centre form a world class cycling events Velopark. £5 million of European Regional Development Fund resources is in the process of improving park faculties and landscaping, for example, new lighting, better site access, new footpaths etc.

The BMX bikes of Olympic hopefuls are scheduled to use the site as a main training facility for London 2012. The customised Eastern BMX and MacNeil BMX bikes of great Brit BMX racers like Liam Phillips will find the terrain more than a challenge!

Regeneration of Manchester is also an aim of the Velopark initiative. Councillor Mike Amesbury said “As well as giving a further boost to the regeneration of the area, it will help inspire future generations and, who knows, maybe they will be bringing more gold medals back to the city”

In terms of what’s left behind after the 2012 Olympics, Richard Lewis (Chair for Sport England) referred to the Velopark as delivering “a mass participation legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games”
